Alegoría de la caverna

2016

2016. Oil on canvas, 60 × 60 cm.

What is the allegory of the cave? It is the metaphor Plato sets out at the beginning of Book VII of the Republic to describe the situation of human beings with respect to knowledge. Through it he explains how we can grasp the existence of two worlds: the sensible world, known through the senses, and the intelligible world, reached only through reason.

I approach the canvas without any model in mind, only the connection with chaos, which is the basis of creation. When I leave the work there is a period of contemplation, in which I sit in front of the painting and study it. It is here that the work reveals its name to me.
