Florencia S.M. Brück is an Italo-Argentinian artist and programmer whose work explores the connections between classical artistry and the digital, virtual and natural worlds. In the immersive installation Out-of-Body, a visual algorithm splits the human form into two spectra, and the viewer’s own figure surfaces within the work. The Tension and Interlude pliage pieces fold and ink the canvas so that the unfolded patterns read as reverse-engineered code. Being Human uses generative adversarial networks to teach an AI what being human looks like, borrowing its light from Renaissance and Baroque painting. Far From Home, shown at the Venice Art Biennale, renders global displacement data as an interactive portal that reads the viewer’s proximity.

LONG ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Florencia S.M. Brück is an Italo-Argentinian artist and programmer, born to a German mother and an Italo-Argentinian father, raised between Buenos Aires, Milan, Los Angeles and Washington DC.
She came to art through code. Working as a programmer in the 1990s, when few women were, she co-founded the web company 9th Insight. She co-created one of the first streamed concerts, OSOC, on 9/9/99; built the virtual environments for the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia from 2004; and developed Mediaset’s media player, which brought streaming television to Italy.
Through 9th Insight and later 9th.com, she has worked with Discovery Channel, The World Bank, the Smithsonian Institution, Microsoft Xbox, Mediaset, Alcatel-Lucent, Dolce & Gabbana, Campari, the International Council for Commercial Arbitration, the Peace Palace in The Hague and Wolters Kluwer.
Her work turns on time, perception, mortality and parallel universes. Out-of-Body, which opened at Kunsthalle Faust in Hanover in 2020, uses a visual algorithm to split the human form into two spectra — an image drawn from her own autoscopy during a near-drowning at the age of five. The viewer’s figure becomes legible within the work as they move, and the piece resolves only through that encounter.
The Tension and Interlude pliage works approach the canvas as an entity in itself. Folded, inked in broad swaths of black or colour, then opened, the canvas yields patterns that read at once as reverse-engineered programming and as intelligent fabric recalling its own original shape.
Far From Home, shown at the Venice Art Biennale in 2019, is a polycarbonate portal displaying graphs built from global migration data. The portal senses human proximity and shifts its values accordingly, asking the viewer to measure their own displacement against the scale of forced displacement worldwide.
Feedback Society, conceived in the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 and shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale in the Giudecca Art District, sets the visitor inside a timeless architectural space that oscillates between the near future and the sense of living in the past. Analog-digital monochromatic projections build an infinite, repetitive cycle, redefined continuously by optical simulations that the observer’s own presence alters. Seen from behind and upside-down, the visitor is held in a shifting present.
Being Human, her most recent collection, works in generative adversarial network language and draws its light from Renaissance and Baroque painting. The results are surreal, dreamlike portraits carrying a transhumanist, longevity-driven narrative. As we try to teach a machine what human qualities are, the exercise turns back on us: the portraits work as ontological gateways, opening new paths or returning us to long-forgotten places.

In 2022 she co-founded Decentral Art Pavilion, a digital art exhibition held during the Venice Art Biennale, which brought together more than four hundred works by over eighty international artists.
She is a member of the Asociación Amigos del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (AAMNBA), Buenos Aires; the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (SRGF); Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan; and FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano. She is also a supporter of Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan. Florencia both makes and collects, with a focus on fine-art artists working digitally, and she contributes to the art community in other ways: she has donated paintings to the fundraising for POMO’s Art Center in Argentina, and has collaborated on releases supporting women’s presence in the field. She writes on art and artificial intelligence, and speaks regularly on the subject — at IKT & Plus Tate Talk, NFT.NYC London and Art Dubai Digital, among others. Her work has also appeared in Prompt Magazine and CIFRA.
